People come from all over the country to visit Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield.

“185,000 people visited the park last year,” says head park ranger, John Sutton.

Sutton says visitors may not be aware of how much work the park needs

“We have a lot of crews who can’t keep up with maintenance here,” he says.

The visitor center doors are not up to handicap standards, buildings need maintenance, and roads need repaved.

The historic Ray House needs repainted.

It’s not just Wilson’s Creek that needs repairs. There is a 12 million dollar backlog for national park repairs.

Sutton hopes the unique aspects of the park are why it’s worth the money.

“It’s the story, not the land that makes this place special,” he says.

The budget for next year’s national parks has not been decided.
